Belén Macías, the director of El Patio de mi cárcel, and several of her actresses appeared before the press yesterday after the screening of her film in the Official Section. Belén Macías comes from the world of theatre and short films and in her first full-length film she has chosen a powerful story about the inmates of a women’s prison.“I remembered a theatre group made up of female prisoners that I had seen perform once.After getting in touch with Elena Cánovas, the director of the group, I began to give shape to the characters.Apart from the Cánovas’s character, all the other roles are fictional,” she explains.The casting process was really demanding: Before she started shooting they spent a month and a half rehearsing and this created a real sense of unity among the cast.
