The French director Christophe Honoré has made a contemporary adaptation of the 17th-century novel, La Princesse de Clèves, which was screened yesterday in the Official Section. Honoré explained that they had used Madame de La Fayette’s classic novel as a starting point to portray the feelings that adolescents have to come to terms with.
He stressed that it was very important for him to tell a story that was timeless because he didn’t want to provide a specific sociological portrait of adolescence; what he wanted was something more universal, and that was why the settings, characters and even the music were chosen on the basis that they were not associated with any particular time period.
