When Juan Zavala began running the Get-togethers in the Sala Club in the Victoria Eugenia last year, he aimed to, “create a pleasant atmosphere where people could talk about cinema.” He achieved this, so this year he’s back and it looks like he’s going to be just as succesful, judging by how well-received the first session was yesterday with visits from the French director, Philippe Garrel, and the team that made the Spanish film Amateurs. Once again the event will start at 2 PM and will be accompanied by Juantxo Zeberio’s piano.
Miika Soini, the Finnish director of Thomas, said that it was the main character that led him to shoot his debut film about a lonely old man. “If I have to choose between a 20-yearold youngster and an 83 year-old, I’ll choose the latter because he has more experience and more stories to tell.” Although he confesses that he is an admirer of his compatriat, Aki Kaurismaki, he feels a lot closer to the Swedish filmmaker, Roy Andersson, who he worked with for two years in the Art Department on the sets for You, the living.
