His first novel "Egunero hasten delako", published in 1969, is considered to be the first modern Basque novel in all the history of literature manuals and anthologies. "Ehun metro" (100 metres), his second novel, was seized in 1974 and published in 1976. Shortly afterwards Alfonso Ungría made it into a film for television . His book, "Ene Jesús", which won the Critics' Prize in 1976, was a literary experiment after which he embarked on a period of silence. Nineteen years later he stormed back with three powerful novels: "Hamaika pauso" (The innumerable steps), which won the Critics' Prize in 1995, "Bihotz bi. Guerraki kronikak" (Love and War, 1996) with which he won the Euskadi Diffusion Prize and "Gorde nazazu lurpean" (Keep me under ground) which won him the Critics' Prize and the Euskadi Prize in the year 2000. A sociologist by training, he has written numerous studies in the field of the Social Services. In 1994 he received the 1st Sustatu Prize from the Basque Government in recognition of his professional career. At the present time he is the Director of the SIIS (Documentation and Study Centre specialising in Social Policy).
