Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Born in Calgary (Canada), he studied in Canada and Germany. After graduating in History and Philosophy from Queens University in Kingston he worked for the Canadian Film Institute (CFI) for ten years where he became director. After leaving the CFI he taught cinema at Carleton University in Ottawa. In 1982 he started working at the Toronto Film Festival where he has held various posts and become director in 1994. In fact Handling has worked on 22 of the 24 festivals that have been held during which he has organised retrospectives about various countries, special programmes with the most prestigious directors and has founded the Perspective Canada section. In 1983 he organised a major retrospective devoted to David Cronenberg for which he wrote an outstanding book. He has programmed retrospectives on Canadian cinema for various festivals, such as the Sundance Film Festival, the Havana Film Festival, and London Festival. He is one of the specialists on Canadian cinema which he has written various books about. In 1998 he was named Knight of the Order of the Arts by the French Government.
