This American journalist, film critic and screenwriter has long been based in Rome, where she has been writing for Variety since 1980, in addition to a number of other publications. She is a specialist in films from Italy, Africa, the Mideast, Iran, India and Eastern Europe.
Deborah Young holds a bachelor of arts from Wellesley College and a masters degree in cinema studies from New York University.
As a festival programmer, she has selected films for Venice and New Italian Cinema Events (NICE). She is also deputy director of the Taormina Film Festival in Sicily.
