Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Born in 1948, Leon Cakoff is the son of Armenian parents who fled the genocide as refugees. A journalist since 1969, he has worked as a reporter and film critic. In 1977 he started the Mostra Internacional de Cinema as part of the commemorations for the thirtieth anniversary of the Sao Paulo Art Museum, where he began his activities as a programmer in 1974.
As a journalist, he was a film critic who spoke out against military censorship in Brazil. His struggle continued with the Mostra when, in 1984, he chose to sue the Brazilian government in order to be able, for the first time, to hold a festival without prior censorship of the films.
His contribution to television as of 1987 includes two programmes where he presents films that have taken part in previous editions of the Mostra.
The Sao Paulo Mostra is outstanding for its commitment to offering a space and awards for new talents. With the same enthusiasm, it promotes veteran directors such as Manoel de Oliveira and Gabriel Figueroa, to which it dedicated a book O mestre do olhar (A Master to Behold).
His short, Volte Sempre Abbas (Come Back Always, Abbas!), co-directed with Renata de Almeida, was selected for last year's Venice Festival.
