Scottie, an old police inspector who has been forced to retire because he suffers acute vertigo, is asked by a friend to take care of his wife, Madeleine, who because of the behaviour, is thouht capable of commiting suicide. Scottie does so, ans saves her in many occasions, but his vertigo makes it impossible for him to stop her from jumping off a belfry. He struggles against the depression this produces until one day, walking in the street, he meets a girls identical to Madeleine.
