Much has been said and written about the special relationship that exists between man and his best friend, the dog. The film details what happens to a pack of dogs when they are unaboidably left behind in the far reaches of the Antartic, in a virgin wolrd of ice and snow. The year is 1958. The first Japan Antartic Expedition is preparing to the the "Showa" base, to be relieved by another party on board the icebreaker "Soya"which is unable to reach the base camp. A small plane is used to ferry the men of the first expedition back to the icebreaker. In the meantime, the exreme cold forces the cancellation of the second party, and dog handlers are in extreme state of agitation. They left the dogs because they believed that the second expedition would inmmediately set up quarters at the base camp. The icebreaker "Soya" has to go back to the civilization. Fifteen dogs have been left behind, chained to posts embedded in ice. Eight of them manage to free themselves; the rest freeze to death. The eight surviving canines begin their fight for survival.
