The body of the writer Raoul Mons is discovered on a small beach of the Ille-et-Vilaine department, France. Inspector Jean Lavardin begins his investigation by going inmediately to Mon's widow, Hélène, who he recognizes as an old friend of his who he hasn't set eyes on in 20 years. Hélène is putting up her brother, Claude, another old aquitance of lavardin. Hélène find herself a widow for the second time. In fact, five years before, her first husband, Pierre Manguin, disappeared at sea with Claude's wife. The disappearance was just as mysterious as it was unexplicable, since their boat was recovered in perfect confition.
