Their Golden Years paints a picture, half mosaic and half x-ray, simply bleak. Without giving in to melodrama, without lamenting, avoiding the pamphlet. Emilio Martínez Lázaro keeps track of the discouragement of many young people who have to grow old in a reality and a country that they don't like, but which is their thing. They are people who never do what they want, but do things to pass the time. Others are passive and sit and wait without much conviction. They are intelligible and explainable characters from their behavior. Nothing seems to really excite them, and when they run - and they rarely do - they are either late or useless.
