The film is divided into five episodes: L'altro figlio is the first and shows us the immigrants who are about to leave for America. The second titled Mal di luna, introduces us to a young man struggling on the floor screaming, his wife remains locked up at home in fear. In the third, La giara, the year is extraordinary for the harvesting of the olive crop, and the large courtyard of the farm is full of carts and unloading peasants. Disputes ensue. In the fourth episode, Requiem, we find ourselves in the sun-drenched square of a small Sicilian town. Here lives a small community that works and lives in this small corner. There is also a baron who owns all the land. And the ignorance of the farmers, that the only thing they claim is a cemetery. The fifth is the titled Colloquio con la madre, and it begins when a large locomotive emits smoke from her. soon it stops at a deserted station, a man with a small beard and a hat gets out of the carriages: "Luigi -a driver tells him-, I'll take you home". The man arrives and wanders from room to room, looking for his mother and his brothers.
