In the village of Fontamara, nothing happens but disasters. And its inhabitants, despite all their efforts to overcome their misery and their numerous protests to the authorities, simply cannot get a solution to their problems. Young and strong Berardo is the natural leader of Fontamara. But he is tired to struggle in vain and he leaves for Rome, where he hopes to improve his economical situation and to marry Elvira. He eventually becomes involved in underground struggle.
