On the farm of the widow Ana Petronova several guests gather. Platanov discovers in Sofia his first youthful love, realizing that she, emancipated, speaks of the welfare of the people and of science. The conversation between the two ends in a scandal, when Sofia's husband, Serguei, realizes that he is leaving the farm angrily. Platanov realizes that his attempts are futile and decides to make a decision.
