The film draws a parallel between the bloody repression in Harlan County in 1930 and the mining strike of 1973. The miners decided in that year to join the union, at the same time that the employers refused to sign the collective agreement, which It provoked strikes and demonstrations, trials against protesters and the repressive intervention of the Federal Police. This fight lasted thirteen months.
