EUROPEAN PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR AWARD
Last year, the San Sebastian International Film Festival created a yearly Award recognizing a European Personality standing out for decisively boosting European cinema from different areas not always known to the public.
The European Personality of the Year Award, to be presented on Thursday, 22nd September at the closing event of the Europe, Cinema and Regions Workshop, goes on this second occasion to Claude Miller and Claude-Eric Poiroux for their work at the head of Europa Cinéma, a body serving the dissemination of European cinema, not only inside the Union, but also in Latin America and the Maghreb.
CLAUDE MILLER
Born in Paris in 1942, he was production director of all of Truffaut’s films from 1968 to 1975. His first feature film as a director, La meilleure façon de marcher, 1975, starring Patrick Dewaere, won a César Award in 1976. From this year until 1987 he made four films. In 1987 he founded his own production company with which he made La petite voleuse, based on a screenplay by François Truffaut, marking Charlotte Gainsbourg’s take-off as an actriz. In 1992 he directed L’accompagnatrice, and in 1994 Le sourire. La classe de neige, 1998, won the Jury Grand Prix at Cannes and in 1999 La Chambre des magiciennes landed the FIPRESCI Award at Berlin Festival. His two latest works, Betty Fisher et autres histoires (2001) and La petite Lili (2003) have won prizes at different international festivals. In 1998 and 1999, Claude Miller was President of the ARP. He is currently the President of Europa Cinéma and member of the SACD Film Commission.
CLAUDE-ERIC POIROUX
His passion for cinema led him to take an interest in a very rare branch for movie buffs: that of exhibition. In 1975, he founded in his native city of Angers, Le Club, a cinema screening films in their original language. The success of the theatre made it possible for him to open a new complex in the early 80s, 400 Coups, from which he promoted creation of the Premiers Plans Festival in 1989, a competition at which many of European cinema’s new talents have been discovered. Poiroux was one of the first people to understand the need to back the dissemination of European cinema by means of its screening. The European Union accepted the project and the little network of 30 cinemas with which the Europa Cinéma adventure began has now grown to almost 1,500 theatres with 7,000 screens dedicated to the showing of European author cinema. Poiroux combines his work as Delegate General of the Premiers Plans Festival with that of Director General of Europa Cinéma.
