Seven films will compete for the 18th RTVE-Otra Mirada Award at the San Sebastian Festival’s 72nd edition, to run from 20-28 September. RTVE, official sponsor of the event, presents this award every year to a feature film reflecting subjects related to the reality of women in all spheres. Films directed, starring or written by men and women creators, whose works address different topics from a gender point of view.
The jury is made up of former RTVE president Elena Sánchez Caballero, director Juana Macías and producer and programmer Paz Lázaro.
Competing for this award in the Official Selection are Emmanuelle (France), by Audrey Diwan, and On Falling (UK-Portugal), by Laura Carreira. The only contender in the New Directors section is Gülizar / Gulizar (Turkey-Kosovo), while the participants in the Horizontes Latinos section are La piel en primavera / Skin in Spring (Colombia-Chile) by Yennifer Uribe Alzate and Cidade; Campo (Brazil-Germany-France), by Juliana Rojas. Contenders in the Zabaltegi-Tabakalera and Perlak sections are respectively Aprili / April (Georgia-Italy-France) by Dea Kulumbegashvili and All We Imagine as Light (France-India-Netherlands-Luxembourg) by Payal Kapadia.
The award will be presented on Saturday 28th at the Festival's Closing Gala.
The films competing for the award are selected by the Festival from among those having their premiere at each edition. Last year it went to The Royal Hotel, by Kitty Green, while a special mention went to All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt, by Raven Jackson.
This year RTVE will throw three film Galas at the San Sebastian Festival’s 72nd edition to preview the titles in which it has a participation: ¿Es el enemigo? La película de Gila / May I Speak with the Enemy?, by Alexis Morante; Escape, by Rodrigo Cortés, and Las chicas de la estación / The Girls at the Station, by Juana Macías.

Emmanuelle is in search of a lost pleasure. She flies alone to Hong Kong on a business trip. In this sensual global city, where she initiates numerous encounters, she meets Kei, a man who constantly eludes her.
On Falling tells the story of Aurora, a Portuguese warehouse picker working in a vast fulfilment centre in Scotland. Trapped between the confines of her workplace and the solitude of her flat-share, Aurora seeks to resist the loneliness, alienation and ensuing small talk which begin to threaten her sense of self. Set against a landscape dominated by an algorithm-driven gig economy, designed to keep us apart, On Falling explores the silent, vital struggle to find meaning and connection.
New Directors
After Gülizar is sexually assaulted, her future husband Emre does not report the incident, but later decides to go after the attacker himself. Gülizar's wedding preparations slowly turn into a claustrophobic, silent journey as she fears that her attacker will be exposed. Her flame of silence burns not only herself, but also the love she feels for Emre.
Horizontes Latinos
Two tales of migration between city and countryside. In the first part, after a tailings dam disaster floods her hometown, rural worker Joana moves to São Paulo to find her sister Tania, who lives with her grandson Jaime. Joana struggles to thrive in the working city. In the second part, after the death of her estranged father, Flavia moves to his farm with her wife Mara. The nature forces the two women to face frustrations and cope with old memories and ghosts.
Sandra is the new security guard at a shopping centre. Running into a bus driver on her first day at work leads to an affair between them. Sandra gets to grips with her sex life and sets out on a road to freedom through her own experience with desire.

After a newborn dies during delivery, the morals and professionalism of an OB-GYN, Nina, come under scrutiny amid rumors that she performs illegal abortions for those in need.
Perlak
In Mumbai, Nurse Prabha's routine is troubled when she receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband. Her younger roommate, Anu, tries in vain to find a spot in the city to be intimate with her boyfriend. A trip to a beach town allows them to find a space for their desires to manifest.
