Ceniza en la boca / Ashes, directed by Diego Luna and part of the Horizontes Latinos section, has won the Euskadi Basque Country 2030 Agenda Award given by the Basque Government for the fifth year running in the framework of the San Sebastian Festival to the film that best reflects the values of sustainability and solidarity as the flagship emblems of the Sustainable Development Goals promoted by the 2030 Agenda at the United Nations and in the Basque Country. The Award comes with 20,000 euros for the majority producer of the winning film.
The jury was made up of the actress María Vázquez, as its president; the artist and actress Jone Laspiur, and the Basque Government Director of Social Innovation, Asier Aranbarri. The presentation took place this afternoon in Tabakalera’s Prism room. The event was also attended by the director of the San Sebastián Film Festival, José Luis Rebordinos, and Chema Prado, a friend of Diego Luna’s who accepted the award on his behalf.
The jury presented the award to Ceniza en la boca “for its capacity to address sociopolitical, economic and gender problems in a cross-cutting manner through the phenomenon of migration”. “With a humanly sensitive directing and performances that generate a cinematographic narrative committed to the social reality it reflects”, reads the jury’s decision.
In a video message, Diego Luna expressed his gratitude for an award that “means so much” to the film’s team, whose hope is to spark reflection among a wider audience. “We believe that cinema is an indispensable tool for change, which helps us navigate these times. Cinema invites us to engage in a collective reflection that can only make us better. The film we made is about a woman who, like so many others, is searching for her place in the world and leaves everything behind. It’s also about those who leave, those who move on, but it’s also about those who welcome them,” he said, concluding by thanking the jury for an award that serves as a “beacon” for a project that has just begun its journey to find its audience.
Included in the Horizontes Latinos section, the production Ceniza en la boca / Ashes has (Mexico-Spain) one against the other six titles competing for the Euskadi Basque Country 2030 Agenda Award: Ruega por nosotras / Pray for Us, (Official Selection); FLORID (New Directors); Cinco años, cuatro meses / Five Years, Four Months, (Horizontes Latinos), La bola negra (Perlak), Fatherland (Perlak), and Fjord (Perlak).
