Depp acknowledged that his second foray into directing had been much more positive than his experience 27 years ago with The Brave when he had had to act as well. The actors who accompanied him at a press conference yesterday all praised the freedom that Depp had offered them on set. Riccardo Scarmarcio, who played the Italian artist, said that Depp was a director who makes you feel safe and pushes you to the limit, while Antonia Desplat, who played Modigliani’s muse, highlighted the freedom they had to collaborate and try things out. “He trusted us and we trusted him”. The actor Ryan McParland said that he created a safe space for them to take risks and to experiment and explore. “It was one of the most fulfilling experiences I may ever have.” Depp himself confessed that he had been fascinated by Modigliani for years and had always admired “his absolute refusal to compromise his vision for anything.
