Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Thierry Frémaux, director of the Cannes Film Festival and general director of the Institut Lumière de Lyon, made Lumière! The adventure begins, a passionate and exciting journey through the cinema of the Lumière brothers that he himself presented here at the SSIFF. Eight years later, Frémaux returns to the Lumières and the origins of cinema, with a new film, Lumière! The adventure continues. This is the title that appears in the final credits, but at the beginning, what we can read is a large sign with Lumière! Le cinema, because, as Frémaux says, “Lumière is cinema”. Asked what led him to return to the Lumières and what he had discovered about them while making this second film, Frémaux said that the first one had been a success, but he felt that people wanted more, so they started the process of restoring the films, writing the narrative, and making it different from the first one. He also stressed that on this second occasion he wanted to work with lesser-known films. “Louis Lumière was a photographer and until the end of his life he kept all his heritage intact. Some are extremely important aesthetically and others have different qualities. Film is a camera and it involves how you position it in order to write a story in fifty seconds with moving images”.
