Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Back in the 1990s, Mike Leigh and Marianne Jean-Baptiste collaborated on the award-winning Secrets and Lies. They have now teamed up again in Hard Truths, which the veteran British director is competing with for the first time at the San Sebastián Film Festival. Leigh said that working with the magnificent character actors in his film had been a joy and a privilege, and he described Marianne Jean-Baptiste as “one of the greatest of such actors.”
Jean-Baptiste, who has accompanied Leigh to San Sebastián, described how she had developed her character, Pansy, from scratch and that looking back on it, she almost felt that she was watching someone else. She was full of praise for the British filmmaker: “It was a gift to work with him again. He loves actors, supports them, and is extremely funny and nurturing.”
Leigh revealed that he had never planned the film in a simple schematic way: “it doesn’t work like a formulaic Hollywood film but develops organically.” When asked whether Pansy could be a symbol of the hard times we are going through, he acknowledged that this could be the case but emphasized that the problems she faces are widely experienced. “This is a universal human condition. But we don’t come up with any answers. We want you to go away from the film with your own hopes and aspirations for Pansy rather than us bringing the film to a comfortable conclusion. It is not a documentary about mental health.”
