Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
The French director Xavier Legrand won the Golden Lion at Venice in 2017 for his first film Custody, which was shown here in the same year in the Perlak section. He’s now back in San Sebastián to present his latest film The successor in the Official Selection. It follows a fashion designer whose life unravels after the death of his estranged father, and just like in his first film there is a clear use of the typical narrative resources of horror films to create scenes with tension even though neither of the two films actually falls within this genre. Legrand explains that, ”tension is something that emerges when we give it space to do so. There is a certain tendency to think that for there to be tension there must be action or a frenetic rhythm that creates this, but I think it’s just the opposite.” In this regard both Legrand and his actors stressed just how important it was to have shot the film in chronological order in order to create these scenes in which the tension gradually increased.
