The Rumanian filmmaker, Cristi Puiu, was in San Sebastián yesterday to present his latest film MMXX in the Official Selection. The film is roughly broken down into four stories that sometimes overlap and share characters and provide snapshots into the lives of ordinary Rumanians during the Covid-19 pandemic. “We must talk about what happened. It would be very dangerous not to do, and I’m referring not just about 2020, but also to the years after it, because this isn’t over,” the director explained. Puiu pays great attention to the spoken word. “I’m interested in words because they are part of an illusion that we live in. Nowadays words are exchanged like products in a market and we don’t pay any attention to what we are really saying. We’re losing control of our own way of communicating, because it’s not easy for words to cover the reality that we live, or that express a feeling like love, but they are used very easily to spit out poison.” This probably why Puiu doesn’t like explaining his films and he doesn’t want to explain MMXX either. “This film speaks for itself.
