Set against the background of Brexit, the Portuguese director Marco Martins has made a hard-hitting film about the squalid existence of Portuguese migrants working very long hours in filthy conditions in turkeyprocessing factories in the rundown coastal town of Great Yarmouth. The migrants had very little contact with the locals, they were like “ghosts in a ghost town,” and the director wanted to draw attention to the fact that the lack of dignity faced by the Portuguese in the nightmarish situation that they were forced to endure was not just an English problem but that it also existed throughout Northern Europe. All the cast confessed that working on the project had been incredibly demanding, made even more challenging by having to shoot during the lockdown caused by the Covid pandemic.
