Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
With her first feature film Innocence the French director Lucile Hadzihalilovic won the New Directors award at the Festival, her second film Évolution won the Special Jury Prize and this year she is back in San
Sebastián to present her third film Earwig in the Official Selection. Her latest film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Brian Catling which Hadzihalilovic had the chance to read even before it was published, and she was mesmerized by it. She was especially attracted by the freedom the novel constantly gives the reader and she said that she had tried to do the same with the film.
It was her co-scriptwriter, Geoffrey Cox, who was responsible for passing on the novel to Hadzihalilovic. “As soon as I read it, I saw certain images in my mind, and straight away I thought: this is a film for my friend Lucile,” he explained.
Both scriptwriters acknowledged that the novel had many layers and they only focused on what they were interested in and that they had left out a lot of things.
