The Argentine directors Gastón Duprat and Mariano Cohn opened the Perlak section yesterday with Competencia oficial, a film set in the world of cinema, featuring Antonio Banderas and Óscar Martínez as actors and Pénelope Cruz as a rather atypical film director. They stressed that the cinematic backdrop was purely incidental and what they had really aimed to do was to tell a story about human stupidity. They also revealed that the project started out from the desire of its three stars to work together on a subject that really inspired them because it was something that they had first-hand experience of. In fact, the script benefited from the numerous contributions that the actors made, and fiction and reality intersected so that it was easy to assume that the actors were expressing themselves through their characters, although they also acknowledged that there was inevitably an element of self-parody in Banderas’s and Martinez’s performances. The film was very well received at Venice this year which they thought was perhaps due to the fact that it was the only comedy in competition.
