Viggo Mortensen will be receiving the Donostia Award tonight at a gala where he will also be presenting Falling, his debut film as a director. He’s delighted to be picking up the award as it means he now forms part of an unbroken chain formed by people who have been really important for him, and feels that the award should be for everyone who found the way to make the festival a reality this year so that we can be here celebrating cinema. “The simple fact of being able to come here and that they let me show my film is already a prize in itself.”
He defines Falling as a really personal film: “the fact is that when you tell the story of something that is really specific, you realise this is how you create something universal.” He also says that when they were shooting, although the story is based on really personal experiences, the other actors confessed that they had had very similar experienceswith their parents.
