The Mexican director, Michel Franco has come to the Festival this year to form part of the Official Jury but he is also here to present his latest film, New Order, in Perlak. A topical indictment of class divisions and the abuse of power, it recently won the Jury Special Jury Pprize at Venice. Franco recognises that classism and racism are part of the everyday lives of many Mexicans and this is something he’s really ashamed about, but this is also why he thinks it’s important to portray these issues in his films instead of ignoring them, which is what we usually do when something makes us feel uncomfortable.
He’s more interested in social issues than politics because he felt that offering a purely political perspective ends up simplifying the complex nature of certain conflicts and he also added that although his film is about a local conflict, he stresses that it actually addresses universal problems. When he presented it to his French co-producers, they were reminded of the situation in their own country with the gilets jaunes.
