The French director, Bertrand Bonello is back at the Festival in Zabaltegi with his film Zombi Child that tells two parallel stories set in Haiti in the 1960s and contemporary Paris. Bonello said that rather than a horror film, Zombi Child is a hybrid film in which he introduces a lot of things that interest him in cinema, and he explains that what he wanted to do was to talk about slavery and French colonialism.
As for shooting in Haiti, he says that it was a very complicated experience because it is one of the poorest and most dangerous countries in the world, particularly for a Frenchman, because of the sense that the Haitians have of having been colonized and having had their culture appropriated. “They don’t believe that you’re going to capture the authentic essence of their culture. But this is precisely what I wanted to do: to learn and not to appropriate anything. Fortunately I made some good friends there who helped me a lot. I’m really proud of having shot in Haiti.
