“I feel it’s just like when the astronauts give a press conference on the day their spacecraft is going to be launched,” the director, Alice Winocour, said after her film Proxima was screened yesterday in the Official Selection. It depicts the doubts and feeling of guilt that a female astronaut has about being separated from her daughter when she takes part in a space mission. The director explained that she had aimed to talk about love and the relationship between mothers and daughters, but above all on how to overcome and deal with the feeling of separation. Winocour confessed that she had noticed how superheroines in films don’t usually have children or at the very least rarely talk about them, probably because the same thing happens in real life, and she thought it was time that cinema starting dealing with this issue and doing something about it. That’s why she had decided to make the film and have Eva Green in the main role as she saw her as a kind of Amazon-like warrior. The actress was delighted to be in the film, which she said showed how, “love is an invisible link that allows us to accept separation no matter how far away we are.”
