At the beginning of 1644, during the Ming Dynasty, the troops led by Li Zicheng conquered Shanxi before pressing on to the Ming capital, Yanjing. By ringing the bells of Jingyang, Emperor Chongzhen summoned the ministers for advice. All were terrified, but the Emperor still believed that he could turn the situation around. He ordered General Li Guozhen to supervise the divisions and to take command of the infantry and the cavalry in order to repel the enemy’s attack.
