The Canadian director Louise Archambault has made the best-selling novel by Jocelyne Saucier, “And the birds rained down” into a film. Screened yesterday in the Official Selection, it features three aging hermits living far from civilization deep in the Quebec countryside.
The director said that she thought that the main issue in the film was “love and freedom”, although there were also many micro-issues that each character addressed in the story. “It’s also about isolation and the inability to love, but I wanted to show the hope that, whatever happens, this is not a matter of age, but of how we use the possibilities we have in life”, she pointed out. Asked about differences with the novel that her film has been adapted from, she said that the structure was rather different and that she had also tried to place more emphasis on the dramatic nature of the characters.
As for the near future, Louise Archambault announced that her next project would be a coproduction with Spain that she would be shooting in Santiago de Compostela.
