Mientras dure la guerra, Alejandro Amenábar ‘s first film in Spanish in many years, is competing in the Official Selection. At a press conference he gave yesterday after the screening of his film which deals with the last days of philosopher and author Miguel de Unamuno in Salamanca in 1936, Amenábar said that he had been inspired to make the film because of the complexity of Unamuno’s character – he initially supported the military uprising against the Republic but then turned against it – and because of the current political situation in Spain, with an alarming upsurge of fascist attitudes. In this respect he dismissed the idea that in Spain they have made too many films about the Civil War. In actual fact he felt that there seemed to be renewed interest in the subject. “There’s been a kind of generational leap. Those of us who grew up during the Transition to democracy have realized that, although it was a historical episode that we studied at school, we really knew very little about it. Our generation has tiptoed around the Civil War.”
