The Swedish actress, Tuva Novotny, has made her feature debut as a director with Blind Spot, an experimental film shot in one single long take, that conveys, in real time, the shock and grief of a family who impotently witness their teenage daughter’s suicide.
The director acknowledged at the press conference she gave after the screening of her film in the Official Selection yesterday that the subject is a wake-up call to encourage people to speak more openly to each other about the struggle with mental illness.
She pointed out that the use of a single take was to give the film a more authentic feel so as not to dramatise or romantise the subject. Rather than apportioning blame and guilt, she had wanted to ask what the blind spots were that are so hard to discover and which prevent us from spotting potential suicides.
The Norwegian actress, Pia Tjelta, who plays the teenager’s mother, confessed that shooting in real time had made it so shocking and terrifying that she had been left emotionally exhausted. However, she also said that it had also given her the opportunity to show all the nuances and different stages of anguish and despair that would normally have been created in the editing room.
