Ryan Gosling is here in San Sebastián to promote First Man, the second film he has worked on with director Damien Chazelle after La La Land. On this occasion he plays Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon. Gosling acknowledged that Armstrong was a complex character with many layers and it was an honour to peel them back and show the man behind the myth. He also stressed how important it had been to be able to rely on help from Armstrong’s wife and sons and even to get to know the farm where he grew up.
The British actress Claire Foy, who played Janet Armstrong, Neil’s wife, accompanied Gosling at the press conference that they gave after the screening of First Man. She said that she had been amazed by how generous Armstrong’s family had been with the huge amount of information they had made available to her. And although she usually tried to rewrite her characters, in this case, out of respect for Janet, she hadn’t added any details of her own. She also added that she was always aware that Neil couldn’t have achieved what he did without her.
