Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Actresses Nagore Aranburu and Belén Cuesta will be hosting the opening of the 66th San Sebastian Festival at 21:00 in the Kursaal Auditorium. The gala has been written and directed by Borja Cobeaga, Diego San José and Borja Echevarría who use humour to portray the idiosyncrasies of film festivals like the one in San Sebastian and the city’s typical description as an “incomparable setting”. “These are bad times for humour. You get the impression that we all feel as if we’re under attack when someone ridicules or laughs at our convictions. Humour has always been an essential part of artistic expression and serves as a catalyst, making us question ourselves and the clichés that crop up again and again. In this case, we want to laugh at the platitudes that are generally used when referring to our city and our festival,” explained José Luis Rebordinos, the Festival Director. Cobeaga defined the commission he was given by the Festival as “innovative, challenging and bold.” He explained that, “the way galas were organised was firmly established; it was uncharted territory and there had never been any room for humour. We were just asked to be ourselves.” The result is a ceremony where the Festival laughs at itself. “If we make fun of anyone, it’s the Festival itself.”
