As Director Naomi Kawase had to cancel her visit to San Sebastián for personal reasons, actress Juliette Binoche and producer Marianne Slot had the job of answering questions yesterday about her film Vision, which is competing in the Official selection. The French actress admitted that it was often really difficult to get inside Naomi Kawase’s head. “She has great respect for nature and its silences and for the actors’ atmosphere".
She really admired the extraordinarily subtle discrete way that Kawase directed her cast and crew and watching her work reminded her of what Koreeda said to her one day: “I don’t direct; I merely observe and record".
Shooting in the heart of the Japanese forest when she was so used to spending time in urban settings had led Binoche to reflect on our relationship with nature and she made a passionate appeal in favour of protecting the environment. “Nature is like a toy that we play with like greedy children. If we break the toy, we’ll have nothing to play with".
