Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
President of the Official Jury here in 2002, Wim Wenders is back in San Sebastián with Submergence, which opened the official section yesterday. Accompanied by the actors Celyn Jones and Alicia Vikander, and J.M Ledgard, who wrote the novel that the film was based on, he gave a press conference in the Kursaal to answer questions about his experience making the film.
Alicia Vikander confessed that she had been really happy to get the chance to work with James McAvoy, her co-star, whose performance she described as truthful and real, while Wenders stressed the wonderful chemistry that had existed between the two actors throughout shooting. As for the underlying theme of Jihadism, the German director said that making the film had made him realise that the problem was partly self-created by the imbalance between the rich and the poor. “We created this monster by declaring the war on terror, which was just what they wanted.” He also hoped that the film would open up a oor to Africa as well as to the oceans which he felt we treat scandalously.
Asked about whether making documentaries had influenced his fictional work, Wenders said that the two genres were not so different. “A lot of reality has to come into fantasy. Without reality infiction, it’s fantasy!”
