The Romanian director Constantin Popescu said that his film Pororoca was basically a film about guilt which shows the harrowing transformation of an ordinary decent father into a monster, after his daughter goes missing. The first part of Pororoca consists of a sequence shot that Popescu described as a logistical nightmare that was the most difficult he had ever filmed, the second part follows the father in his descent into rage and paranoia, while in the third part the film reaches a violent climax. Popescu said that he had tried to imagine how he would react in this situation and how an audience might react watching something that most people don’t usually want to see. He also imagined the guilt trip that a character going through such an awful experience must be experiencing and how he might get to the point of no return.
