Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Hong Sang-soo is one of the most prestigious contemporary Korean directors. Although his work has been screened at many different festivals, this is the fi rst time that he has competed at San Sebastián. As is usually the case in this director’s work, his latest film Yourself and Yours is often ambiguous and mysterious in the way that it represents the time and space that the main characters in the story move through, and their motivations also seem to be difficult to decipher for the audience at times.
The director was just as enigmatic as his characters when he appeared at a press conference at the Kursaal yesterday, when he declared: “knowing things is not as important as we think”.
He was evasive when asked to explain the features that defined his style, and claimed that he was incapable of explaining his decisions when it came to shooting a film. According to the director, “if I start a sequence with a clear aim in order to achieve a certain effect, what usually happens is that when I shoot it, I take a different path”.
