According to Ewan McGregor, who presented American Pastoral in the Official Section yesterday, there isn’t a right way to direct; it all depends on your personality, and in his case he shoots from an actor’s perspective.
McGregor is also the star of his debut film as an actor. He revealed that he had already signed up to play the leading role when the opportunity to direct came up, and that he hadn’t wanted to give up his role as an actor.
As well as showing a family drama, the film also provides an overview of American history through archive footage and the experiences that the characters go through. The director claimed that American Pastoral wasn’t a critique of the 60s counterculture, as he thought that neither Philip Roth’s classic novel nor his film adaptation painted a black and white picture of the events they describe.
McGregor also stressed that it meant a lot to him that Roth had written to him to say he liked his film. On the other hand, the opinion of the critics wasn’t so important to him, either as an actor or as a director.
