Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
The Spanish producer Esther García is forming part of the Official Jury this year and is really enjoying listening to her colleagues’ comments and debating with them. Being on the jury has made her more visible this year at the Festival as normally her work can go unnoticed by ordinary people, but she thinks that the producer’s role is sufficiently visible as it is really the director who has to defend the film in public.
She feels that the film producer’s profession also has its creative side, especially when it comes to choosing the script and optimising the resources that you have to ensure that the project comes to fruition. She underscores the role of the script. “It’s the starting point for everything: if it’s no good, then the rest won’t work.”
Being an optimist by nature she sees the current state of Spanish cinema from a positive perspective, although she acknowledges that there are motives for seeing the glass half-empty. She thinks that of course you can make films with very few resources but that it’s important to provide the industry with the money to compete with films from other countries.
