TRYING TO CHANGE THE CENTRE OF THE WORLD

“Everyone wants to be the centre of the world. What’s di fficult is trying to change the centre of the world.” This quote from The Giant, the debut film by the Swedish director, Johannes Nyholm, which he presented yesterday in the O fficial Section, may well sum up a great deal of
the spirit of the film, and has a lot to do with the dynamics of a game like pétanque, which is
an unusual choice to use as a metaphor for life.
“Pétanque isn’t a very cinematic sport because it’s really static, but it goes really well with the
main character, because he is on an internal journey, he’s not a dynamic person. What he tries to do is create magic in his imagination, and the fact is that there is something magical about pétanque when it’s played well and you manage to place the ball in just the right place that you want, by sometimes changing your reference point,” Nyholm explains.
The Giant is inspired by the director and scriptwriter’s personal experiences, as he himself has played pétanque a lot, but the idea came to him from a recurring dream in which he couldn’t communicate with other people, which made him really anxious. Communication has always been really important for Nyholm: “I want to know what’s going on in other people’s heads”.
