Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
The 63rd San Sebastian Film festival was officially opened last night at a ceremony in the Kursaal, hosted by the actresses Mireia Gabilondo and Cayetana Guillén-Cuervo against a backdrop that recalled the official festival poster.
The gala opened, as is usually the case, with the presentation of the Fipresci Grand Prix by Pamela Bienzolas, the coordinator of the international critics’ federation to George Miller, the director of Mad Max: Fury Road, who confessed it was surreal that a film like his could be given this award.
The various sections, grouped into themes, were introduced by the Spanish actors Antonio Resines, Itziar Ituño, Dafne Fernandez, Bárbara Goenaga and Paco Léon, who were followed by the actress Paprika Steen, together with her fellow members of the Official Jury. The Danish actress confessed that it was a great pleasure and honour to be chairing the Official Section jury and that she was sure she spoke for all of them when she said that there was a cliché that said that cinema was a reflection of our lives, whereas, “in our case: cinema is our lives”. She added that whatever the decision they came to was, they could all agree that the one outstanding winner would be the cinema.
The ceremony was brought to a close by Alejandro Amenábar, whose film Regression was shown afterwards. Although neither Emma Watson or Ethan Hawke, the stars of the film, could accompany him, they both sent their apologies for not being able to attend owing to filming commitments.
