Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Francine Brücher is a French film sales agent and consultant who is a member of the New Directors jury this year. She says that it’s much more difficult to sell films nowadays than when she started working in the profession 40 years ago. There are so many TV channels that people go to the cinema less as they prefer to watch films at home and this has made things especially difficult for arthouse films. That’s why she thinks festivals are so important: they provide a reference point and are also an importanttest for distributors who want to see how a film is received.
She now works as a consultant in Munich where young people ask her for advice on how to get a film selected at a festival or try and find co-distributors. She thinks it’s very hard for young directors nowadays: “They’re very courageous because it’s very difficult to get funding to make a film.” Asked whether there’s a common theme running through the films she’s seen here, she says that young directors often tell stories about young people with similar interests and problems all over the world: drugs, sex, problems with parents or love stories, but these are set within a different social context in each country.
