The Canadian film Les Démons aims to show the real and imaginary fears of a tenyear- old child, Félix, who lives in an apparently peaceful residential suburb.
Félix is afraid that his parents might get divorced; he’s frightened of paedophiles, murderers, of catching AIDS. “I’ve delved into my childhood memories and demons,” the director explained. “Children think a lot; quite a bit more than we adults imagine. Félix is quite lucid on occasions, but at other times he lets his imagination run wild. We can all identify with a child’s feelings. As we grow up, our fears and anxiety gradually calm down, or at least we learn to live with them.”
Apart from inner fears, the film also deals with real fears, as there is a storyline about a paedophile. “When I was a little boy, back in the 1980s a series of children of my age were kidnapped. I used to listen to my elder brother tell these stories and it used to terrify me. In any case, I wanted to avoid making the paedophile a black-and-white character. He’s also a victim to a certain extent.”
