Amama is the second film in Basque to compete for the Golden Shell in the Official Section after Loreak last year. Asier Altuna’s film deals with the disappearance of a way oflife based around the Basque farmhouse, and the pain that this loss causes to families in the countryside. The story focuses on Tomás and Amaia, father and daughter, who represent two conflicting ways of understanding life. The director, who presented the documentary Bertsolarihere in 2011, explained how, “We tell the story of Tomas’s worl d almost without speaking, and without the camera moving; Amaia’s world on the other hand, has colours, music and camera movements. I’m delighted to have found this way to tell the story.”
Altuna knows the rural world really well and thinks that life in the Basque farmhouse, as it has been up to now, no longer makes any sense.
