The Indian actress, director, writer and activist Nandita Das is delighted to form part of the Official Section Jury this year. It’s a task she has already carried out at Cannes on two occasions and she stresses how difficult it is to judge other people’s work: “you’re judging from our context and the film is made in a completely different one. That’s why for me the best thing has been the discussion afterwards, because everyone comes from a very specific context but together you form an opinion that is a little more collective.”
She’s currently writing her next film, which she’s been researching for nearly two years. It’s about the Indian writer Saadat Hasan Manto who had to move to Pakistan after partition. Since he’s not well-known outside South Asia, she wants to tell the world about this extraordinary maverick who she feels is extraordinarily relevant to the time we are living in as he talked about highly contemporary themes like national and religious identity and freedom of expression and empathy towards women.
As for her work promoting human rights and social causes, she also says that she doesn’t really consider herself to be an activist; “it’s just a platform I try to use for social advocacy.”
