Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
In 2004 Lucile Hadzihalilovic won the New Directors award with Innocence. The film starred Marion Cotillard and established the director as one of the most promising up-and-coming filmmakers in French cinema. However, her latest film, Evolution, presented yesterday in the Official Section, has taken her eleven years to make. “When I presented Innocence I was aware that it was a difficult film given that it was abstract and contemplative. I thought that Evolution, which on paper was more narrative-based than my previous film, wasn’t going to give me so many headaches when it came to trying to find funding, but I was wrong. Working in an imaginary, metaphorical realm , far removed from realism, meant that more than one producers told me they had reservations about it, so in the end I had to shoot the film with a lower budget than planned, with a script that was more concise than the one I had at the start of the project.”
