Flanked by the producers of his film at the press conference held yesterday after the screening of Tigers, the Bosnian director Danis Tanović said that shooting a film about the mis-marketing of infant formula in Pakistan had proved to be incredibly difficult. He began working on this project back in 2006 but even though all the screenplay was true and could be backedup, and the insurers wanted to help, they wouldn’t cover Tigers because the corporation at the heart of the story had such deep pockets that the risk of their attempting to block the film was enough to shut down production. The film was finally saved by Indian financiers and producers and the shoot moved to Indiawith locations in the Punjab standing in for Pakistan. Tanović said that even eight years later, “all companies are doing this; not just Nestlé,” and that, “if you feel pessimistic at the end of the film, so do we!” He also stressed that his film wasn’t a one-man-show, and that even though most of it had been shot in a language he couldn’t understand, “I wanted to ensure that you couldn’t tell it was made by an outsider.” He added that “’I’m a tough guy, but this shouldn’t be happening. I’ve got five children and the lossof children is the worst thing that can happen to you.”
